When was Down's syndrome discovered?

In 1959 Professor Jerome Lejeune, a geneticist in Paris, discovered that Down's syndrome occurred as a result of an extra chromosome.

Chromosome's are present in cells in the human body and contain genetic information which tell the body how to work.

In people with Down's syndrome, there are 47 chromosomes rather than 46.
